This is our calling, to use martial arts as a path to access our bravery and our vulnerability, to be at home in our body; and in the process, find joy and empowerment, transformation and connection: true strength.

OUR APPROACH TO MARTIAL ARTS

Karate is a practice developed across centuries and cultures as a way to cultivate self-mastery through empty-handed fighting. Karate is a mindset, an operating system, and a training methodology. Armor are the reactive behaviors that protect us when we’re not ready or able to be fully present in our experiences. Our approach to martial arts is designed to develop strength of body, mind, and character by addressing how we train (soft skills) as well as what we train (hard skills).

Karate Without Armor integrates self-defense, kickboxing, strength and conditioning, and classical karate kata and applications into a context-based, progressive training method. Each training session starts with asking why? Is this drill’s objective sport? Self-defense? Personal growth? We provide honest, realistic training that helps you to clarify and realize your goals.

Our consent-based, progressive curriculum is specifically tailored for adults and teens. All students start with no-contact skills training, and if they choose, they can continue to be tested to learn more challenging skills and participate in variations of our full-contact sparring practices.

Hard Skills

  • STRIKING

    The art of using your body to generate and transfer sufficient force to create concussive impact while minimizing or avoiding damage received in return.

  • GRAPPLING

    Physical manipulation of mechanical advantage to gain control of another’s body, attain positions of dominance, avoid positions of weakness, and break free or restrict movement.

  • THROWS & SWEEPS

    The art of moving your opponent’s center of gravity outside of their base or otherwise breaking their balance while protecting your own center of gravity against disruption.

  • SUBMISSION LOCKS

    Methods of restraint and/or gaining compliance by applying pressure to the joints or other vulnerable areas and ways to preemptively counter or break these holds.

  • CONDITIONING

    The art of strengthening the body and training the nervous system within its primal movement patterns through coordinated resistance exercises and restorative practices for optimal performance.

Soft Skills

  • PRESENCE

    The practices of cultivating openness and compassion, comfort with discomfort, and stillness to access the wisdom of your intuition, sensory awareness, and past experiences.

  • STRATEGY

    A system for realizing an objective through developing and executing plans and tactics based on your abilities, resources, and constraints.

  • INDOMITABLE WILL

    Resilience and self-esteem earned by expanding beyond your comfort zone: overcoming obstacles, learning from failure, and showing up for your priorities.

  • CONNECTION

    The communication and boundary tools to actively co-create a dojo that encourages bravery and openness; where we ask for and offer support to our community.

  • STEWARDSHIP

    A commitment to mastery through deliberate practice, leadership development, and teacher training to maintain, honor, and pay forward the gift of our practice, in and out of the dojo.
